Professional IT Certification

Professional certifications in computer technology are non-degree awards made to those who have achieved qualifications specified by a certifying authority. Being a contributor to the Wikipedia entry (Professional certification -computer technology), I can attest that there is much more information you need to know with regard to IT certifications.  Thus, please read the information below which will elaborate as to why it is IMPERATIVE for one to get "certified!"

Certifications are necessary for entry into today's technology job market. According to CompTIA, the Security+ & Network + certifications could result in six figure salaries! As the certification video on the home page of this website explains- many courses in the University of Mount Olive's (UMO) CIS major/minor track to industry certifications. Specifically, CIS 323 maps to CompTIA's Network + certification, CIS 455 maps to the Security + certification, and MIS 315 maps to the Project + certification. Thus, undergraduate CIS majors or minors are afforded the unique opportunity to get certified right on campus!

The University of Mount Olive (UMO) is an authorized Pearson Vue testing facility which enables students to take their certification tests at UMO. In addition, UMO is an authorized CompTIA Academy Partner  which provide for significant discounts (up to 50%!) for certification exams.  Furthermore, CIS students can become exam proctors at our Pearson Vue testing facility; being a test proctor in "high stakes" testing can add to the credibility of students and enhance their resume..

Also emphasized in the certification video is the value of an IT (CIS) major or minor- technology goes with any major and in my expert opinion, it should be, at the very least a component (minor or selected courses) for every student in their specific field of study. According to "burning glass, 2019," digital skills provide a career pathway into middle-and high-skill jobs.  Whether someone is majoring in math, science, education, criminal justice, accounting, business or ag business, technology will play an integral role in one's particular career. Thus, a minor is CIS can "seal the deal" in getting not just a good job but a GREAT ONE! Moreover, our CIS Minor allows one to choose various tracks- (cyber security, database, programming, and in the near future-social networking). For example, one course that all students can benefit from is the new course being offered in Excel which focuses on interdisciplinary skills- spreadsheet skills used in chemistry, biology, finance, accounting, management, technology, etc. and the course maps to a Microsoft Certification in Excel too! To reiterate- TECHNOLOGY & TARGETED CIS COURSES GO WITH ANY MAJOR!

Recent course development on the cybersecurity front takes existing courses that map to Network+ and Security+ certifications and bundles them other courses to scaffold students to higher-level computer certifications such as the Cybersecurity Analyst + and the Ethical Hacking and Penetration Testing certifications.
